Adjust the View Options for Finder windows

Updated June 8th, 2019.

If you open a Finder window and it looks like this:

Plain Finder Window
Finder window, icon view, generic

You’re really short-changing yourself.  It could look so much better. The icons in this window at least have good names (mostly) but most of them look the same in icon view. If you go to the View menu and come down to Show View Options you’ll get a nice set of options. Pay attention to the highlighted areas in the picture below.

Showing the icon preview, and making the icons bigger, makes everything better. See below.

(Yes, Smarty-Pants, you can use the slider at the bottom right of the Finder window to adjust the icon size. But you can’t turn on the Icon Preview without going to the View Options.)

Very important: the settings in View Options are “per window.” So you get to do this for every window, if you want. The good news is you probably only want to do this for a few.
